Missive To Tasmania's Auditor General

So, Launceston has an asset that the RATEPAYERS paid $8Mill for 8 years ago that the COUNCIL is gifting to The S Group and is apparently ready to give more still. Ratepayers have lost income from rates for 8 YEARS AND along with that all kinds of LOST OPPORTUNITY and some people are wondering if the MAYOR has a CONFLICT OF INTEREST!?  PLUS  the RATEPAYERS haven't been given an opportunity to consider the proposal and probably there is more still hidden away under the guise of it being Operationally Confidential. Why the secrecy!?

This deal was cut and dried in CAMERA and it hasn't been deliberated upon in OPEN COUNCIL. A Freedom of Information application to the OMBUDSMAN, under resourced as that office is,  would take years, indeed has taken years,  to garner an answer.

It is a State Govt. election, so where are our POLITICAL CANDIDATES questioning the morality and equity of the BIRCHALLS BUILDING being
GIFTED to The S Group or indeed any developer.

OVER 8 YEARS
Council Management initiated the purchase of the building without there being an appropriate and transparent process. Management with a majority of Councillors support, have been navigating a way forward IN CAMERA and in the DARK and they along with a majority of Councillors, endorse the lack of transparency and are thus by extension are comfortable with the lack of ACCOUNTABILITY!

For instance, the York Park deal was, and is being, cut and dried well away from PUBLIC SCRUTINY and now THE BIRCHALLS DEAL repeats this class of shonky dealing.

ONCE would be an ABERRATION but when repeated it becomes a PATTERN OF BEHAVIOUR and ratepayers bear the cost BIGtime. Here $8MIL PLUS!!!!
Elsewhere, Councils behaving this way have been placed under administration.

Local Govt is BROKEN and the CANDIDATES in this election are missing in action. CALL THEM OUT and be very very careful about HOW YOU VOTE!!

Also, if you are concerned about Council’s behaviour in this and other matters you can contact the Tasmanian Audit Office for a free and fair assessment on Phone: 03 6173 0900  Mail: Level 2, 144 Macquarie Street, Hobart
